Christmas is a time for joy, warmth, and cherished moments with family and friends. The season offers a wonderful opportunity to create lasting memories and engage in activities that bring happiness and fulfillment.

As a highly-rated Residential Care Home, our team creates a bright Christmas every year for our residents. We’d like to share some of the top festive activities for our residents that may inspire you to do with your loved ones.

1. Putting Up Christmas Decorations

Get the festivities started with Christmas decorations! This is an activity which can be modified to any mobility level and can be made as simple as just putting the decorations on the tree.

We love to decorate our space as much as possible and get all our residents involved in this exciting activity.

There is also an option to take things one step further and create some homemade decorations, which are sure to bring heartwarming memories in years to come.

We take great pride in our care home and love getting our residents involved in decorating around Christmas!

2. Baking Christmas Treats

Add the enticing aroma of baked Christmas treats to your festively decorated home. Whether it’s cookies, gingerbread or cake, baking is a fun and rewarding activity for all ages. For the elderly who may not be as able in the kitchen as they once were, a little help will go a long way. Especially if baking or cooking was something that used to bring your elderly loved one joy.

Even if your loved one is still completely able in the kitchen, just getting together to create something can be a wonderful experience for all involved.

3. Crafting Christmas Cards

Get creative with your elderly loved ones by getting together some materials and creating some Christmas cards. All you need is paper and a pencil, but you can also consider using coloured cards, paint or even cut up magazines to spread some Christmas cheer!

Getting creative is especially beneficial for the elderly. It can be a great way to relieve stress, maintain motor skills, and increase self-esteem.

4. Virtual Family Gatherings

If distance, illness, or accessibility separates family members, consider organising a virtual Christmas gathering. Utilise video apps to bring the family together for a virtual celebration. Share stories, play games, and exchange well-wishes, creating a meaningful connection despite the physical distance. Bridge the distance this Christmas with the help of technology.

5. Attend Community Events

Many communities organise festive events during the Christmas season. Check local calendars for concerts, light displays, or holiday markets that your elderly loved ones might enjoy. Attending these events not only provides a change of scenery but also fosters a sense of community and connection and can give something back to your local area.

6. Watching Christmas Films

An easy way to kick back, relax, and get into the Christmas spirit is to watch some much loved Christmas films. Whether it’s a new film or a nostalgic classic, watching Christmas films with your elderly loved one provides an opportunity to reminisce about past holidays, share laughter, and enjoy the magic of Christmas cinema.

Christmas is a time for togetherness and joy. By incorporating these Christmas activities with elderly loved ones, you not only create memorable moments but also contribute to a festive atmosphere filled with love, warmth, and connection.
